  1. A snail is an air-breathing gastropod mollusc 
  2. with a spiral shell. There are thousands of 
  3. species, on land and in water. The typical 
  4. snails of the genus Helix have two species in 
  5. Europe. The common garden snail Helix aspersa 
  6. is very destructive to plants.
